📖 A Look Back at VGC 2019
VGC 2019 marked the return of restricted Pokémon, creating one of the most power-dense and strategically demanding formats in VGC history.
This was the era of:
Legendary powerhouses such as Groudon, Xerneas, Kyogre, Lunala, Rayquaza, and Solgaleo Essential support staples like Incineroar, Tapu Fini, Mega Salamence, Smeargle, and Stakataka
High-impact strategies including Primal weather wars, Geomancy Xerneas, Trick Room legendaries, and layered speed control
The format reached its peak at the 2019 World Championships, where Naoto Mizobuchi (Japan) captured the Masters Division World Champion title. His championship team, centered around Lunala and Primal Groudon, showcased elite-level control through Trick Room, Tailwind, Intimidate cycling, and precise positioning. With tools like Wide Guard, terrain control, and flexible speed modes, the team excelled at managing both explosive offense and long endgames 🇯🇵🏆
VGC 2019 rewarded players who could balance raw legendary power with discipline, patience, and matchup awareness, making every turn meaningful and every positioning decision critical.
Even years later, VGC 2019 remains a defining format — remembered for its intensity, strategic depth, and legendary moments on the biggest stage.
