Friday Night 2006 Worlds Retro @ Full Grip Games!

Are you attending the Full Grip Games Journey Together $4k weekend in Akron, OH? Or even looking to play in a grass roots Pokemon TCG retro event? Consider joining us on Friday March 28th at 6:30 PM for a 2006 Worlds format tournament at Full Grip Games!

This tournament will be IN PERSON at Full Grip Games with a $10 buy in with a 100% payout in store credit. No additional registration for the Standard $3k or GLC $1k is needed to participate. This is just a side event that the community is hosting!

Retro super fans and newbies alike are welcome! Payment and sign ups will be taken in store, just signing up on this Limitless page is not enough for a spot in this event! We are using PlayLimitless to gather early sign ups and spread awareness of the event, Full Grip will be running the event through their system in store.

This event WILL ALLOW players to use playtest/proxy cards! At the very minimum we require the proxies to be printed. For example, please do not write the text of cards in your deck on energy cards. Foreign language, WCS, Celebrations, and TCG Classic cards are legal to use as well. If you're using cards that have different backs please make sure to use sleeves with a completely opaque back!

2006 Worlds Format (Hidden Legends - Holon Phantoms)

This event will be using the same format as the 2006 World Championships. If you're new to the format, don't fret! There are plenty of resources to check out. Below are some recommended resources to look at for decks from the era:

https://ptcgarchive.com/2006-decks/

Some players may have extra decks that can be borrowed for those onsite without one, but it is recommended to bring a deck with you.

You can also check out Jason Klaczynski's blog for a brief history lesson about the era!

Prizing

With the tournament having a $10 buy in, 100% of the entry will go back to the players in the form of store credit at Full Grip Games. How the prizing will be distributed among the top placing players will be determined by the amount of players.

Tournament Structure

The tournament will be best-of-1, 40 minute swiss rounds with the number of rounds determined by the total amount of players. We will also be using the Time and First Turn rules as they were back in 2006:

  • Winner of coin flip must go first, determined after game setup
  • Player going first does not draw a card at start of turn
  • Player going first may not play supporters
  • Player going first can attack
  • No +3 turns, player with the fewest prize cards remaining when time is called wins, if tied on prizes the match will go to Sudden Death

If you know anyone who will be attending or even willing to drive out, share this tournament page! If you have any questions at all, join the Tricky Gym Discord server. There are plenty of people in there who can answer your questions on the format or tournament itself. Thank you for checking out the tournament and we hope to see you for some Friday night retro at Full Grip Games!
