Hello all,
We have all played Base-Fossil, one of the most popular retro formats in the Pokemon TCG. For this tournament though, we will be turning back the clock to the true original Pokemon format. 9 out of 10 experts interviewed claim that playing with only Base Set, the original 102 cards in the Pokemon TCG, is the definitive way to play the game. So, we have decided to be the change everyone has wanted to see in the world, and are hosting a Base Set only tournament this holiday season! It's time to show is king by entering the most prestigious Base Set tournament of the century.
Only the original 102 cards from Base Set are allowed in this tournament. This represents the TCG as it was when it was first released! If you think this is too limited to have a diverse metagame, you are right! Fortunately, it is still a fun format to play, despite the limited good decks. If you have never played base-only before, there is no better time to start! https://jklaczpokemon.com/base-set-decks/ is ideal if you don't have time to build a deck from scratch, or want to know what is good. Just remember two things: if you really want to win, haymaker is probably the only realistic option, and the decks on that site are not perfect! If you have the chance, play around with the decks and alter them to make them your own to have the most fun possible!
Rules:
All matches will be played on TCG ONE (https://tcgone.net/). Because TCG ONE does not have Base-only as a built-in format, simply create your deck under Base-Fossil, but only use cards from Base Set. Only the 102 cards from Base set are legal in this tournament.
Make sure spectation is enabled for all of your games (you need to pay to disable it, so this should not be an issue). Any player who times out or disconnects will be declared the loser of the game.
The tournament will be closed decklist, so people will only be able to see your deck archetype (as auto-detected by Limitless) until the tournament concludes, when all lists will be made public. You still need to submit your decklist before the tournament begins.
The format consists of a number of swiss rounds which will be adjusted based on the number of players. Then the top 4 players will enter a top-cut and play for all of the glory. All games will be best-of-one, except the finals, which will be best-of-3.
The winner of the tournament will be declared the supreme champion of Base-only. And, if you can win with a deck other than Haymaker we will double the prize, making you the double supreme champion of Base-only!
